Can I count on you?............

Good evening family, friends, fans, and all who read this blog (media), I'm finally ready to push a very personal initiative that I have been working on for the past few months. Let me catch you up to speed first. I started a non profit organization about 20 months ago. The name of it is 88 Wayz youth Organization. What 88 Wayz is all about in short is helping kids reach their full potential by offering an in school mentor/leadership program. The name of this program is TALKS mentoring which is an acronym for Transferring a Little Knowledge Systematically. Beyond that we have after school programs, tutoring, monthly seminars that address crucial subjects in our kids lives. Also, 88 Wayz do a free of charge football camp yearly for the whole community. We have SAT/ACT prep courses, college field trips, college admission assistance. These are just a few of the things we are doing. Other things that we would like to do is secure our own small building so we can house our operations as well as provide more services to our youth outside of the school, we would also like to sponsor field trips to local, state and national government sites. We would also like to expand our staff so we can work more effeciently, therefore providing a better service to the community. These are some of the things we are doing and looking to do in the future. If you would like to know in full detail you can go to www.88wayz.com.

Now to the part where I need your help. The organization has organized what we are calling the 88 Wayz Million Dollar March. We are asking for 50,000 individuals to donate $20. I know by sending out this one blog its not going to happen. Maybe we will get a great deal of you that read this to go out and donate and I would be very appreciative if that was to happen. But I need you to go a step further also and tell 10 of your friends or family about this and ask them to do the same.

As many of you know that the world is swallowing a lot of our kids up because of a lot of the bad influences that they encounter. I believe that if we get more involved and give them more positive options a lot of our kids will make the right choices. Right now we have 90 kids in the program and that number will double the next school year. We need your help to keep a good thing going and making it bigger.

If you feel compelled to help please go to www.88wayzmdm.com and make a $20 donation and get the word out. I have set up an email that you can write to me personally with any ideas, comments, or questions you may have. Send them to 88wayzmilliondollarmarch@gmail.com. I would love to talk to you more about it. By the way, if you want to get involved and give go to the email address here and let me know that you're in. I thank you for helping me do something that is truly dear to my heart, helping kids reach their highest potential.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://2009bears.blogspot.com/2009/12/i-need-your-help-can-i-count-on-you.html' title='I need your help. Sorry about that. This have probably been the most difficult season I have had in the NFL. Dealing with the injuries all year and the lack of production, which is something that is sometimes out of my control, and most importantly losing all these darn games have made this season up to this point not a rememberable one.

As you may already know, I am trying to recover from a neck injury that has been nagging me since the Arizona game. I think this may be the most games I have missed in a season. Certainly the most in the last 7 years.

Have you guys been listening to my internet radio show. If you have not then shame on you. The show, I think, have been really good but of course I have a biased opinion. The reason why its been good is because you guys have been listening, calling, texting, and emailing in to the show and I appreciate it. If you don't know where to go to listen log on www.voiceamericasports.com, at 6pm eastern on Tuesdays. The call in number to the show is 18883469144, you can text your comments and questions 18633990107, and you can email questions and comments to sportsmanlikeconduct@gmail.com. The name of my show is Sportsmanlike Conduct. I would like to hear from you. Listen to Sportsmanlike Conduct and give me some feedback on the show.

Unless you've been under a rock for the last week you had to hear about all things going on with Tiger. So what do you have to say about it. Here's what I got to say about. First of all, I dont want or need to know all of Tiger's personal business. For that matter is it anybody's business. Being an athlete myself I sympathize with him because its really not fair that when we as athletes get in trouble every Tom, Dick, and Harry have something to say. Just because athletes make a lot of money and we are in the public eye for what we do for a living dont give everyone the right to feel like they are obligated to know our personal life. I always say that if Joe Blow gets a DUI he gets his ticket, court date, jail time, or whatever his consequences for his mishaps and go on with his life. As an athlete we have to deal with the same as Joe Blow but then we have to deal with everyone want to know all the personal details behind the facts. It will be ok with me if the facts were giving and thats it. Instead, we have to deal with the speculation and the idiots that want to spread the gossip. Question? If Adrian Peterson gets a speeding ticket is that news worthy? Yes, because it was news this morning. If my brother Paul Clark get a ticket for speeding, why is that not news?

I know what you are saying, Dez you guys are athletes and it comes with the territory. My answer to you is, I know. The question still remains is it fair or right. I'm not dumb enough to think that its going to change. It's just the world we live in. Another question, why do we put athletes on such a high pedestal? By the way, do you expect more in terms of morality and character from athletes? Why? Are we not just like you?

Before you get the wrong idea, Im not in any way shape or form trying to defend what Tiger has done. I'm only saying let's look at him as a man not superman. On the golf course looking at him as superman is acceptable. As men we all fall short of the glory. It just burns me up when I have to see athletes go through unnecessary scrutiny because they excel athletically at a sport. Like I said before knowing the facts of a story is one thing, trying to dig up things from someone's personal life, if they did not commit a societal type crime, is not justified for any person. Did we really believe that Tiger was perfect? No. You knew he used profane language. Every man has his flaws, just so happen that this flaw got out to the public. What's done in the dark will come to light. Lets just hope that the star craved media and all the people that follow try to help get a man back on the right track instead of using all of its influences to tear someone down. We would be better for it if we do this for not only athletes but everyone.

Im running out of things to say about our poor play. Right now we're not a good team and definitely not performing like one. By no means will I ever throw in the towel. When we take that field every sunday I will go out there with the confidence of a champion. However, right now he thoughts are kind of sobering to say the least. Coming into this season I would have bet you my entire salary this season that after nine games in we would be with a subpar record. I know the fans out there are extremely disappointed also. They should be. Right now everyone wants answers. Trust me if I had them I would be the first one to tell you.
I know what the problems are. We are not blocking, tacking, running, throwing, or catching well enough to be a good team.

We do have 7 games left in this season with a good Philadelphia team coming to Chicago for a prime time game. Right now its now or never for this season. Its not beyond reason for me to think that we can put together a winning streak and win out. We have good players on this team. Enough good players that if we are all playing well we can beat any team out there.

Did you listen..........

If you listened to my show Sportsmanlike Conduct today, you heard a guy call in and debate with the crew on the opinion of Donavan Mcnabb being a hall of famer. Here's my argument. Let's look at some of the greatest QB's of all time and compare their numbers.
Joe Montana 40,551 yards 273 TD's 139 Int's 63.2 %
Johnny Unitas 40,239 yards 290 TD's 253 Int's 54.6%
John Elway 51,475 yards 300 TD's 228 Int's 56.9
Terry Bradshaw 27,989 yards 212 TD's 210 Int's 51.9%
Tom Brady 26,446 yards 197 TD's 86 Int's 63%
Peyton Manning 45,628 yards 333 TD's 165 Int's 64.4%
Dan Marino 61,361 yards 420 TD's 252 Int's 59.4%
Brett Farve 65,127 yards 464 TD's 310 Int's 61.6%
Troy Aikman 32,942 yards 165 TD's 141 Int's 61.5%
Steve Young 33,124 yards 232 TD's 107 Int's 64.3%
Roger Staubach 22,700 yards 153 TD's 109 Int's 57%
Fran Tarkenton 47,003 yards 342 TD's 266 Int's 57%
Joe Namath 27,663 yards 173 TD's 220 Int's 50.1%
Bart Starr 24,718 yards 152 TD's 138 Int's 57.4%
Otto Graham 23,584 174 TD's 135 Int's 55.8%
Dan Fouts 43,040 yards 254 TD's 242 Int's 58.8%
Bob Griese 25,092 yards 192 TD's 172 Int's 56.2%
Jim Kelly 35,467 yards 237 TD's 175 Int's 60.1%

These are the best QB's to ever play the game. I may have left one or two off the lis but I believe I did a very thorough job of compiling this list. Now let's look at Donavan McNabb's stats.

29,320 yards 194 TD's 90 Int's 58.9%

These stats are from a 10 year career. Let's say that he plays 5 more years. This is just hypothetical, he could get hurt and play less which would put his HOF bid in jeopardy or he can play another 8 years and be solid. Just for argument sake lets say 5 years throwing for an average of 3,000 yards 19 TD's an 9 Int's a year, which has been his average. That will put him over 44,000 yards 290 TD's 140 Int's.

I know the argument, he didnt win a championship. Ok, true, not to this point anyway. There are a few players on the list that dont have a ring. The next argument is he is playing in an era with greater QB's. Ok, true again. I did not say he will be a first ballot hall of famer, only that he will get in.

Looking at the numbers he will have more passing yards, TD's and Int's than 11 of the players on this list. If he does not win a Super he will have to wait a few years (5-10) after he is eligible to get in. He will get in if he goes another 5 years putting up the number of an average season.

Every Tuesday at 6 pm Eastern listen to my show Sportsmanlike Conduct. Actually, most of the comments I get from my posts are pretty good. Even those that are in opposition to what I wrote, like bfos' comment. Speaking of roads, sometime the road to success can be very bumpy with a lot of unforseen obstacles that one will have to navigate through, around, and over. One may like to speak his mind but wisely chooses to speak not. A word of advice, don't ever let anger be you motivation to pronounce your displeasure. It will only lead misinterpretated emotions and words. Its never as bad as it appears.

After playing this game for 11 years professionally and the last 26 years of my life, I have made up my mind that I want to stay close to the game in some capacity when I'm done playing. I'm definitely not going to be a coach be cause I cherish the time I get to spend with my family. Coaches have hardly any family life. That's one of things that I admire about them. They put in a lot of hours to do their jobs. It takes great commitment from a coach at the college and professional level to do what they do. God willing, I still have a few more years in the league so I have a little bit of time to make up my mind.

I dont know what to title this blog entry........... No excuses, I have fans out here that want to here from me, so here I am. And to Matt who commented today on my last post, this buds for you brother.

Hope you have been able to keep your sanity the last few weeks with the two back to back loses. In your opinion, is winning 30-6 good enough? Taken the tempature, so to speak of some fans, it seems like people were bombed out after we won. I know there are some things we would like to do better like; keep Jay off of his back and score touchdowns in the redzone. I agree with you on that one but every game there are going to be some plays we would like to take back or some areas in the game we feel we could have done better. Winning 30-6 just dont happen all that often in this league so I am pleased.

So how have you been lately. For me, its that time of year when the body is always aching from all the little and big bumps and bruises that have accumulated. Matter of fact I'm sitting in the tub right now soaking while I'm writing you. That would have been a good one liner for twitter, which i think is dumb but can be used effectively as a promotional instrument. I might start doing my own little youtube or ustream mini series on myself. I think I can say all of what I just type in a shorter time period. Probably won't do it. Maybe thats something I can do in the offseason so we can stay in contact. What you think?

Sometimes I wonder...

Sometimes I wonder if.........

I wasn't a football player would people still treat me with the same admiration and respect. When I woke up that morning I had a renewed excitement to play football. It seemed as if had been a couple of months since I last played.

Did you enjoy the game? It was very exciting. Detroit came to play, especially in the firs half. Their rookie QB came out firing to Calvin Johnson, the best young WR in the game. It took out defense a few series to make the necessary adjustments to take away that connection. Coming out in the second half the defense shut the Lions down by getting after the QB and causing a couple of key turnovers, giving the offense the ball on a very short field leading to easy score.

I seen a stat that said since Lovie became our head coach we have cause the most turnovers in the NFL in that time span. That says a lot because Lovie is always preaching to the defense to get the ball out and the do, year in and year out.

The offense benefited from a superb special team effort and turnover crated by the defense. We were able to put 48 points on the board without having 300 yards of total offense. That's what happen when the defense giv you the ball with 5 yards to go for a TD and the special teams have a TD return and cut the field in half for the offense.

How about your QB going airborne for the TD. I would rather not see him taking hits like that but that's the kind of player we have. He's going to get it done any way he can, even if it means sacrificing his body to do so. I had a front row seat for that TD. as he was getting spun around I'm thinking to myself, I hope that didn't hurt.

Nice win for the BEARS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Like butter............

We're on a roll. Maybe it's a short roll but we are rolling. In order to get on a winning streak you have to win that first one, then the second, and we have done that. These two hard fought victories has really shown the character of this team. A bunch of guys that will fight to the very end because losing, in our mind, is not an option. I still believe this team can be a special.

Seattle has to be the loudest outdoor stadium in the league. That place get so loud that you cant hear yourself talk to yourself. The thing that is amazing is that the crowd will come to a hush when their offense is on the field. Very intelligent crowd out there. Plus, the city of Seattle seems to be a great city. They have a great sushi restaurant out there named Red Fin if you wish to check it out. Some of the guys and I went there and had a nice meal.

How about the play of our young receivers. Coming into this year all the talk was about how good could they be, we need to bring in someone else, Devin is not a number one receiver. I think up to this point they have proven all the naysayers wrong. I am supremely confident that they will continue to show and prove.

As for myself, I was really trying to push myself back into the action in Sunday's game but it just didn't happen. I will give it a go again this week. Hopefully, by Sunday I will be healed and healthy enough to make my home debut this year. It's been strange watching from the sideline after not missing a game since '04. Sorry I can't answer them all and for that reason I rarely answer them but I do read them. I appreciate all the well wishes and the love from Bear Fandom. We couldn't do what we do without you. The fourth phase was amazing during the Steelers game. Please keep that up. I have a question for you, do you have ill will for Orton. I ask, because at the game when they showed a clip of him throwing a touchdown the crowd booed him. Just thought that was odd. If you do have ill will for him, please explain. I know that you as fans don't always understand why we do some of the things we do and vice versa.

Got something for you but you have to listen to the show tonight in order to get them. I'll be giving away 2 tix for the next home game. Log in to www.voiceamericasports.com at 5pm central and listen to my show Sportmanlike Conduct to find out how. Call in to the show with your questions and comments at 1-888-346-9144 or email them to sportsmanlikeconduct@gmail.com. Chances are that it wont happen but in all seriousness, it's time to go on a run. I think we were able to put on display what kind of team we have. What we have is a good football team that have a chance to do something special. I truly believe that. I know that it's kind of early for the fans maybe to start thinking that far ahead but for me if I didn't believe it I would not say it. We still have a long way to go and a mountain to climb. Sometimes as people we look at the task ahead of us and think, man can I really make this happen. We see that mountain in front of us and look at the height of this enormous task and ask the question, how the hell am I going to get up there. What we fail to realize is that life is simple when you break things down. You're not going to climb that mountain in one day. You got to attack it in incriments. The old cliches, one step at a time, one day at a time. That's the way we will go about trying to reach the NFL mountain top. We lost our footing a bit in Green Bay but we didnt fall down or off the mountain. We refocused our efforts against Pittsburgh and took a step towards the top.

Im all cracked up.....

As you probably know by now, I have a cracked rib bone. The next question is how long will I be out. The answer is, I really dont know. I woke up feeling a lot better today. We have big bad Pittsburgh coming in this week and hope that I can be out there with my teammates going to battle against the world champions. Pain is only temporary.
so how many of you have jumped off the bandwagon? I know the answer to that one. Nobody. As poorly as the offense played in the first half, our defense managed to keep us within striking distance the entire game. There are a few plays that I would like to have back in that game. As an offense we didn't play nearly consistent enough to provide sustained momentum for any lengthy period of time. The defense played well the whole game. Take away that last play they had and Green Bay is held under 200 total yards. Of course, we cant take those plays back but when you look at the positives which I choose to do, the offense put up good yardage even though we were stop and go all night. We weren't able to run the ball as effective as we wanted to. This hurt us in the long run.

Before Bear fandom go wild, let's put this lose into prospective. This is only one game, we have fifteen games left. I'm not trying to belittle the lose because of course, it is the Packers, just saying there is a tremendous amount of football left. Jay will be better. I don't think anyone really expects him to have another game like that and we have to help him more when he's moving out of the pocket trying to make plays down the field.

The most damning thing from this game is that we lost Urlacher for the season. All is not lost, we have a lot of depth on this team, especially at linebacker. There is no way to replace a guy like Lac but if you are going to try to, the guys we have in reserve have all started for this team at one time and will fill in nicely.

I sustained a back injury. I don't know how long I will be out. Right now lets just call it day to day. Hope I wake up in the morning feeling better so I can give it a shot to get back on the field ASAP.
All of our goals, besides going 16-0, are still in front of us. This is the longest rivalry in the NFL. I believe, if I have my facts straight, this will be the 179th time that these two organizations have battled. We lead the series 91-80-6.

When I got here in 2003 the question was asked to me, “do you get more hype to play against the Pack” and my answer was no, I treat them like any other team on the schedule. Why did I make that remark, I proceeded to get killed on the airwaves that week. I believe there was something mentioned in the paper also. Boy, have things changed. I didn’t really understand the magnitude of Bear fandom emotional attachment and the history of this game. It didn’t take long for me to find out. To be honest, I don’t think there was a defining turning point but over the course of the next few games I really grew to dislike this team. Let me tell you something, there is more that I would like to write but of course it will be all over the airwaves again and in the paper. Let’s just say I don’t have a problem getting a little more jacked for this game. How’s that. I will also say that every year I look forward to playing them because it usually brings out the best in us except for a couple of forgettable games over the past 5 years. I look forward to playing on the big stage Sunday night.

Like to say that David Haugh the beat reporter from one of the major newspapers did step up and give me some great ideas for the Million Dollar March. He was the only one however.

I got you next time JD. All I ask is that you put the proper notation in your articles. Give a brother some love and let the masses know where they can come read it straight from the source, uncut, no chaser, straight up hard core. OK that might be a bit much but like I said before its my damn blog and I can do as I wish. That sounds good saying it as I write it.

I got an idea, let Ken Mrock do the maintenance at Soldier field. He does a good job with our practice fields. Enough of that.......

What I really want to blog about is............... You media guys out there that read this blog, you know who you are, help me to get an initiative off the ground that has been only a concept in my brain until now. I have my 88 Wayz youth organization that I head up back in my home town. What 88 Wayz is, it's a mentor /leadership program. 88 Wayz go into the school system of Polk County Florida and take kids that we and the administration select and spend and hour a week with these youngsters, trying to cultivate great social and leadership skill in our youth. As you know, these programs cannot be done without funding. What I plan to do is to raise a million dollars by the end of this year by asking for donation of $20 per individual. If you do the math thats 50,000 people. I was on a plain going back home from OTA's telling a guy about it and he gave 88 Wayz it's first $20 donation and said he would complete the cycle by giving the last $20. I have dubbed this The Million Dollar March. we are in the process of getting literature out on the website. We plan on using the funds for things such as computers, field trips, home needs, scholarships seminars, day to day operation expenses, building to house 88 Wayz and much more. I would be more than delighted if you guys could interview me about this and give me other opportunities if there are any to go out and promote this cause. I would really love it if some of your bosses would use their name ABC, NBC, ESPN, FOX as a partner so 88 Wayz can go and help all the kids we dream of helping.

Yes I am calling the media out to see how much help I can get with this. We hear of a lot of the negative stories how about helping me make a difference in the community that raised a kid to become a man that it could be proud of.

So will you help, because I know you are reading this. Thanks in advance. I would love to tell you more about what I'm trying to do.

Our field is terrible......

Let me get all of my negative energy out first. Did you guys take a good look at our field. If you did you had to be disgusted. Lets take a look at some of the things before I make my statement about how I feel. Just assume you didnt read the title of this blog. Last week we played on a field that was immaculate in Denver. We have only played one game at Soldier Field. We are basically the biggest market in the league and I say that because New York is split between two teams. Green Bay has a nice playing surface. It was not always this way until the last couple of years when they revamped it by adding a synthetic grass that is woven in with the real grass. Some of our opponents comments: "yall play on a cow pasture" "this is the shittiest field in the league" "what the hell is going on with this field". These are a few comments that come to mind. What the hell is the park distict of Chi cgo doing when it comes to taking care of this field. They have to resod the whole field before we play Pittsburgh, which will lead to loose turf. Basically, to some it up in a sentence, we have one of the worst fields in the NFL and there are no excuses why the Chicago Bears, of all teams, should have to play on such a bad surface.

Thank God preseason is over and here we come Green Bay.

Sunday night football, couldnt think of a greater way to start the season

I know he is acting out of line

Look, I know there is going to be some that disagree with this blog, but I'm always going to be pro player when it come to issues like the one out in Denver thats going on with Brandon Marshall. Simply put, pay the man his damn money. I know he is acting like a butt hole right now but the man is worth more than 2.2 million and besides that I don't think its a whole lot of guys out in Denver that really wants to be in that program because of the way Josh McDaniels runs it. All you people thats going to come out and say, "yeah but he signed a contract and he should honor it" please shut up. I guess in that situation its only cool to call this a business when the ownership have us by the scrotum. Understand this, Brandon is a young gifted receiver therefore he needs to capitalize on whatever earning potential he has now because when those skills diminish, do you know what happen to that contract he'll be under, they will want him to take a pay cut or just cut him without owing him a dime even though he may have 2 or 3 years left on the contract he signed. I get tired of this one way street that us football players are on with our contracts. If the owner had to honor the contracts then you wouldn't have nearly as much of this squabbling going on year after year. 2.2 million is a lot of money but its chump change to one of the best receivers in this league. Pay the man and get on with life. You dont want to lose him like you did with Jay. By the way quit trying to act like you won't trade him. I know your smarter than that Josh. You're not going to let him get to free agency and catch the first plane out of Denver without trying to get something for him.

Im out

I hate night gmes

So its a day later and I'm just as tired as I was when I got home at 3:30 in the morning. The problem with night games on the road is that you get back so late. I didnt get to sleep until about 4 am. That sucks if you are like me and cant sleep well during the day. So I tell myself that I might as well get up and do something productive. I dragged myself down to get a little treatment on my jammed up neck. Blocking 300 pound men can be hazardous to your health. From there I went and got a massage then came home made some phone calls and got caught up on some things, picked the girls up from school and here I am. I'm drained and ready to go back to sleep.

Last nights game had a regular season feel to it. From the start of the week we prepared for this game as if it was a regular season game. From the kick off the intensity of the game was that of the regular season. Denver had a lot of build up energy and we all know why. For those of you that have been living under a rock, the reason why is Jay Cutler was returning to Denver. It was a hostile environment with the crowd booing, making it hard for us to hear in the huddle and at the line of scrimmage. The Denver defense was coming after Jay like he took something from them. Then again he did, a great quarterback. We just had to weather the emotional surge that they came out of the locker room with. It was also their first home game under the regime of Josh McDaniels. I think after to talking to a few of the guys out there its safe to say everybody is not on the same page with Josh Belichick, oh, I meant McDaniels. Did you see his sideline outfit? Do it remind you of someone? I played in Denver for 3 year with Shanahan and it always seemed that the players out there love playing for that team. I dont think its the case now and I'm talking about the guys who you dont see on tv.

We looked pretty good. After the first couple of series after we weathered the storm we got rolling. I really do think that we have the makings of a team that can do great things this year.

Like a real game work week......

Before I start this blog, I would like to thank the people out there that actually read this. You guys keep me coming back to write. I enjoy your comments also. Yeah, I read them, every single one. I especially enjoyed reading the ones from my last blog.

This week, the week of the third preseason game is suppose to be the dress rehearsal for the regular season. This will be the only game that we really put in any kind of game plan all preseason. We actually play on a sunday also. This will be the most the starters play, probably going into the third quarter. Practices have been conducted in the same fashion also. While in camp we practice against ourselves, meaning we run our plays against our own defense. Now that we are moving closer to the regular season and transitioning to that mode, we have our scout team, which consists of your non starters and development squad, simulate the opposing team's defense. We can now practice the things that our opponent will do. Our coaches do a great job of breaking down the film play by play then relaying all the tactical information down to the players. The looks that they see on film are then drawn up for the scout team. They perform the assignments that are carded giving the best impression they can give of the person they are simulating. This is how we prepare for our opponents.

Usually by the end of the week we go into the game knowing a great deal what to expect. However, each team prepares a little different for each team, especially during the regular season. Im sure they will have a few wrinkles in their game plan that they haven't shown in a game yet as do we. To put a number on it, We will know 80-90 percent of what they will do and they will know about the same about us. What it comes down to is who will execute the best. Usually the players are equally talented, some may argue this but from team to team talent levels are about equal. One play here or there usually dont win a game. So running a trick play or surprising a team with something new wont win you a game. Game planning is a key component to winning but without execution of that game plan you're back to square one. In order for us to stand on top of the mountain and put the Chicago Bear flag at the summit, a point called Super Bowl Champ, we must out execute our opponent week in and week out. Green Bay here we come. I don't play defense.

Are the Bucs better off without Derrick Brooks? probably not...

Why did the media ask me what advice I would give Jay Cutler on going back to Denver? Do he really need any?

Does anybody care what I'm writing about?

How good do you think this offense will be? I would answer but I have a biased opinion.

Mike Vick is going to play this week. How much does the mean to you?

Am I now the best backup tight end in the NFL? Again, I won't answer because I have a biased opinion.

Why am I even writing all this nonsense.

What runs, never walks. On the move, never stops. I guess I better stop there. You know you got to be so politically correct these days or some sensitive soul out there will claim to have their feelings hurt.

What happen to the good old days?

If my daddy did a blog he would piss a lot of people off because he shots straight from the hip.

I wish I could shot from the hip, this blog would be better. Blame it on these sensitive people.

So we play the Broncos Sunday. It will be strange to see my homeboy Kyle on the other side of the ball. He'll be wearing orange and blue but not the right shades. He started off his preseason in a dismal fashion throwing 3 picks. People were making a big deal for him throwing the left handed pass that was intercepted in the endzone. It was 4th and goal, what do you want him to do take the sack or try to throw the ball up for grabs and hopefully the make a play. You didnt get the whole story of course looking at ESPN. That's how the media try to play you. Manipulation. Don't let them do it to you when it come to your Bears. Bear down. Grin and Bear it. Bear necessities. Ok, Im getting a lil bit carried away. Good night.

It will all come together.......

Gents and Gentlewomen good day.
So how did you enjoy our first home game. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. Moving the ball all around the field, Jay finding a litany of receivers. I really don't know if I used that word litany appropriately but oh well this is not a term paper. Running lanes were created by the offensive line and deuce deuce was able to exploit them, one of them for a long touchdown. Lets not get to far ahead of ourselves. Like Jay said in his interview, we have to keep our feet on the ground and keep making progress. There were still mistakes made out there. The only difference is that winning covers up a few more of them. The defense played well, putting up a (de) fence in front of the goal line and making sure there were no outsiders gaining entry.

Ya boy got a chance to taste the sweet taste of end zone bliss. OK, I might be going a little over board with that assessment but I'm the author here and I can write it like I want. Over the past 5 years in Ron Turners offense if you count preseason games, I have scored maybe 5 or 6 times on that very same play. If you are an upcoming opponent Ron Turner told us that we will not run this play in the regular season so there is no need to practice stopping this play. You'll be wasting your time. Oh yeah, that old guy, what's his name, number 88 won't have much of a role in the offense so if he comes in the game you don't have to worry about him. I hope I'm not giving up to much of our game plans here.

So Brett Favre is back........

Plexico 2 years for shooting himself......

Mike Vick set to make his debut for the Philadelphia Eagles.......

Jay Cutler going back to Denver.....

Good to be back home.....

Listen to Sportmanlike Conduct tomorrow 6 pm EST on www.voiceamericasports.com we will be talking all football including the topics listed above. Camp number 11 is over and done. When I first started playing professional football, drafted in 1999, I honestly couldnt picture myself playing this long. Matter of fact, I didnt think I was going to make the team that year. The three Tight Ends that were on the team were pretty established and here I am a converted receiver who had never played the tight end position trying to outplay one of these three guys, or at least I thought. One of these guys was Shannon Sharpe. He wasnt going anywhere. I didnt have no idea how to block. I'm trying to learn a playbook that was very overwhelming. However, I kept plugging along and was able to make some plays in the passing game. I really believe that making these occasional plays I showed enough of a spark that they decided to keep four tight ends that year. Now here I am finishing my 11th NFL camp. What a blessing it has been. Its time to sharpen the focus now because now that camp is over it means that the season is right around the corner. Here we come Green Bay

Chicago QB's

It seems like for a century now Chicago has been thirsting for a franchise QB. Earlier this spring it came to pass that Chicago has finally gotten the one piece of the puzzle that most fans think was missing from the team. Jay Cutler is here! A pro bowl QB that is still young and prime and on his way up in the NFL. I know that most of the fans out there are anxiously waiting to get to the regular season so you see what this offense is going to made of. You are the fan thats going to go to the game and enjoy it for the all the excitement it brings with being a fan. The same if you are watching om your couch. I just want to caution you to not let the media still your thunder when it comes to your excitement of Jay. Not that its an agenda of the media to do this but since he has arrived, the most newsworthy things reported about Jay has been gossip columns, contrived stories, and overblown nonsense by them.

This is going to be an exciting season for all of us. Im really looking forward to going out on the field with a QB of his caliber.

How about the reports coming out of Minnesota that Brett Favre will be joining the team at some point this year. I think
I hinting to this in one of my first couple of blogs. That storying will never die, at least not this year. Since we are through the first full week of preseason games who are the teams to beat out there. If the bears are not your team, how is your team looking.

Have a good day.................

First game

Well folks to sum it up, it was not what we wanted to put on display for the first game of the season. We came out with very high expectations but left the field knowing we have a quite of bit of work to do before we go up and face Green Bay. Jay is right, there is no reason to panic, we will be fine. The offense sputter throughout for the first unit. We couldn't run effective enough and the were not enough plays made in the pass game along with a few costly mistakes. The defense didn't fare much better. If I am recalling the game right, they played decent in the run game. In the pass game, Buffalo was able to make plays and move the ball downfield. Special teams was our best phase but im sure they will like to do some things better also. Special teams did create a turnover, had a big kickoff return, and had a couple of nice downed punts inside the 10.

This was a starting point and measuring stick to find out where we are and where we need to be.

Buffalo Bills tomorrow night......

Finally we get to play a game. It may only be a preseason game but its still better than practicing with no game in sight. We only have one week left of camp then we go back to our regularly scheduled program. I know everybody is anxious to see Jay Cutler take his first snaps as a Chicago Bear and quite frankly I am also. As much as you fans are excited to see him play, I am just as excited to play with him.
So T.O. is not playing because he has a toe injury. Do you like that fact that he tweeted about his toe injury before he told his team trainers? That's the kind of stuff that will have all NFL teams trying to put some kind of limits on things like twitter.

How do you feel about Mike Vick being signed to Philly? I know everyone has the right to their own opinions but some of these people are going to far. Don't ask me why I was looking at the Fox news network, but I was and i do on occasion. Anyway, this guy was on there saying that Vick should be banned for life from the NFL solely because he shouldn't have the chance to go out and make millions of dollars and be famous. Well riddle me this, say Vick went on to become something besides an athlete and become richer and more famous should they take that away from him also. C'mon people. He went on to say he should have served 10 years and that he had a lenient judge that gave him a soft sentence. Name another situation where a person served that much time. I'm not condoning what he did, what I'm saying is that we as a people cant pick and choose when we want to apply the tag 'paid his/her debt to society' to situation of choice. This guy went on to say that Vick should have to work a regular job at Dennys or somewhere, like others because of his conviction. It seems to me that envy is a factor. I know that some will strong opposition to his reinstatement but I pose a question. If you or someone that's not famous that have a computer skill that he has turned into a million dollar career and he is convicted of dog fighting, should this man not be able to come back to a career if a business is willing to pay him for his skill. Just food for thought..... I don't know Vick personally but as a man I think that he deserve a second chance like everyone else, even if it means he make millions.

We need to get started on the right foot this year. Its imperative that the first team defense, offense, and special teams need to come out and perform at a high level. Confidence is contagious and I believe its there but the only way for it to continue to grow is to play well.

Dont forget to listen to my internet show Sportsmanlike Conduct on Tuesdays at 6 eastern www.voiceamericasports.com. I will definitely have a lot to say bout this game

Vet Day

Yesterday I had the day off because of what we call a vet. Basically what this means is that you are old and they know that you are more suseptible to soreness, aches, and, pains so the medical and coaching staff allow for you to take a day off.

Our focus is now on the Buffalo Bills. This is when nut cutting time comes, when we have to up against other players and teams and put to thetest all the skills we have been trying to develop over the course of the last few months.

Right now we have 80 players but by the end of all the preseason games we have to cut it down to 53. Therefore this is the most important part of the year for alot of guys. Honestly, and I dont know if the coaches will admit it, there are only about 8-10 spots not already solidified if not less. Maybe people are still competing more for 1st, 2nd, or 3rd team but the majority of the roster is set but for the bottom end. These guys will be in a battle for a job and a career. Stay tuned to see who makes it and who dont

Getting going....

Sorry for not updating. After saturdays practice we had a chance to go home for the night. I probably got the best sleep that have gotten all year. When I got home the family and I ate a meal and it was lights out. I slept from 5:30 pm to 9:30 am, with a two hour break at 2:30 am. For those of you that know me, know I dont go to sleep in the day time (take naps), neither do I sleep in past 7 am. so you know I was sleep good.

This morning I woke up at 6:45 but I'm struggling to get going this morning. I'm not a guy that lay idly in the bed but since I woke this is where I have been. We have practice in about an hour and some change. We have two today.

I think I'm really getting comfortable with being a long snapper ( the guy that snaps the ball to the punter). As time goes on I am starting to feel like that is a skill I can develop more and possibly prolong my career. I know I will never be able to be the long snapper in Chicago because we have the best long snapper in the business in Patrick Mannelly. When my skills as a Tight End start to diminish with age this is an option that I have to further y career another 3,4, maybe 5 years. Think about this, the minimum salary for someone with the number of years in the league that i have is $750,000. I think I would be fine making that salary as a long snapper. Got to go to practice and I be practicing my long snapping.

Rain rain go away

It was a rainy one out there today. The fans still showed up like usual despite the rain. I would like to second a comment made by Jay. Chicago is a better town to play football in than Denver. Thats no slap a the city of Denver, it's the truth. Chicago is a bigger market, the fans come out to all events. Take for instance the practice Denver had at their stadium the other day, it was at best they said 13,000. We get that here in Bourbonnais. When we practice over at the stadium tomorrow there will be no less than 30,000 there minimum. I dont know if Jay said it like I said it but you know what im getting at here.

As a player when you see those clouds in the sky you always have a little hope that some thunder and lightning come with it when you're in camp. It didn't today but it was good it didnt. This was the first day we had a chance to practice in the elements and we know here in Chicago we will have to play in some kind of adverse climate at least 3 times this year. So it turnedd out good. Personally, today it seemed as I was in a funk that I could break out of. Didnt have the worst practice but it definitely wasnt my best. As you see its time for a meeting in seven minutes. You people are going to have me late. The fine is about $1800 for being late so I gotta go.......................

Am I my brothers keeper

You know that camp has gotten good when you start having a little push and shove here and there. Over the last two practices we have had about 3 little mix ups. Before all the speculation starts, let me say that nothing serious happen just a bunch of macho men trying to show their dominance to one another.

On this team its pretty hard to have a real knock em out type of fight because everyone on this team pretty much get along (rookies not included into that statement yet). For the most part, the core of this team has stayed in tact since Lovie took over the helm. We have been through so many battles and such together you start to develop a brotherhood so to speak. Its one of them things like you can call your family member a dumb ass idiot but no one else better ever say it. Your brother will get mad at you and want to square off with you but when you eat dinner at night you back to being the same. That's kinda the way that fights happen during practice. The first little skirmish was a big joke. Everybody who ran into that pile ran in there with no intent on swinging at anybody, not always the case. I know me and Kevin Payne got a kick out of it. I had him in a full nelson before he broke loose and went into his Muhammad Ali impersonation. We got a few chuckles before going back to the huddle.

Like Lovie tells us, "if you get in a fight you better fight him like he's your brother".

Yes Sir

Back to talking football....

Ok, I had to take a short commercial break from talking football but now we are back to our regularly scheduled program.

Its been three days of padded practices now, not including the one that we are having today, and the legs are beginning to feel a little different now. This is the hardest part about camp, keep your legs as fresh as they can be. After about another 3 or 4 days you will start to hear guys talking about how dead their legs are feeling. It comes with the territory. Luckily we don't do two-a-day practices or our legs will already be shot. A lot of the guys combat this by getting in the cold tubs. I'm not a cold tub man. It suppose to help resuscitate you legs. Call me a wuss if you want but I cant deal with the freezing water. The water literally has ice dumped into it. Some of the players swear by this for of treatment.

So I get another text from my brother telling me to go on and kick ass. Then after I do it tell the person "Son, that hurt me more than it hurt you to do that to you but I had to teach you a lesson". That's classic Paul "Fresh" Clark material. Oh, by the way, for you who didn't know, I have a internet sports talk show that comes on every Tuesday at 6 eastern. Tonight my brother (Co host) will be running the show so you can check him out. I hope to make a late appearance on the show after practice is over today. The name of the show is Sportmanlike Conduct. Log on to www.voiceamericasports.com today and listen. They'll be talking all NFL today. You can also call in at 1-888-346-9144.

Honestly, I'm already tired of these practices not because I don't want to be hear, it's because you go against the same people over and over and over. They know what we're doing and we know what they're doing. The exciting part of camp comes when we can start focusing on other teams and studying them. I know what Wale and Alex going to do. The defense can try to disguise all they want, we have seen the stuff so much that we can sniff it out. Most of the time Olin know what's coming and alert the everybody but the WRs before the snap of the ball. Alex know if I get inside position I'm going to my rip move so i can get my body inside of his. I know that Wale is going to get in a wide 9 alignment and do his up and under hump move (knowing that its coming and stopping it is two different things). I can say this and I know the defense feels the same, we are going against some of the best talent in the NFL and it will have us ready physical to go against whatever team we face.

Will Mike Vick get picked up......................

Is Brett Favre really retired this time....................

I think I can play 6 more years.................. probably not

Off the subject....

So I heard from my brother this weekend that a young man that we were and still will try to help in his personal development was sentenced to 2 years in jail because of a song that he wrote and recorded. The name of the song is Kill me a Cop. You can imagine what the lyrics said or if you are the least bit computer literate you can go a hear the song for yourself. Just let me say this, I dont agree with the topic or lyrics of this song.
Saying that, I do believe that we are protected by our first amendment. Knowing this young man, I will say that he was the type to wear his feelings on his sleeve. The first time I was introduce to T. O. or Antovio the story was that he was a homeless teenager with great musical talent. For you folks that didnt know I dabble in music also. So my brother and I decided to help this young man and encourage him to stay in school and continue to work on his music. Antovio told me one time he passed out on my couch in the studio because he was to hungry to manage. After he was found and given something to eat, he couldnt hold it down cause his stomach rejected it. I have had very in depth conversation with this young man about life and he understood that he had made many mistakes but his struggle was within because of all the things he had been through at such an early age. He once made a song on the topic of killing himself because it would free him of all the stresses of his life and this is when he was 18. The same age when he made the song Kill me a Cop. He has also written and recorded some of the most thought provoking songs never heard, clever funny songs, and socially conscious songs.
Why am I even writing about this you might be asking. I am taking time because I see a very talented young man being sentenced to jail for 2 years for expressing a feeling. Yeah, he shouldn't have made the song but its a bigger picture. Can musicians or anyone that record an act of expression that is threatening be prosecuted for it. If thats the case, they can go back in the archives and indict many. Could that be true? Can it also be true that they took advantage of someone without proper representation and muscle him into taking a deal because he pleaded no contest.

Tonight we put on the pads.

Ladies and gentlemen tonight we really start playing football. The pads go on for the first time this year. This will separate the men from the boys. Anybody can look good in shorts when you know no one is going to hit you. People will start to separate themselves from the pack. Lets be real about it, I'm really talking about the rookies and first year player that haven't been around long. We know what the guys that have been on this team and in this league can do. Saying that, us veteran players still have to go out and prove that we still got it. What we have done in the past is just that, the past. The NFL can be a cut throat business. when it comes down to making them finally roster decisions management can care less about who you was and what you did for this teams a year or years ago. It's all about who you are and what you can do for us right now this season.

So i get a text from my brother this morning and he tells me to go out and do my thing today and show everybody what ten years in the league is all about. Then I get to my room and read an article in my hometown paper about my high school teammate Ray Lewis and I think he summed up what being in the league for a decade is all about. He said that talent fades but wisdom continue to grow. I cant run as fast as I could when I was 22 but I'm a better football player now than I was then. Over the years you learn so many little nuances of the game that makes you better. I'm one to always talk a lil smack to our young guys and I told one today that I may not be able to run past him but I guarantee i could consistently get open because I know the game better than him. Aint it odd that I'm considered an old man in football but in the rest of society I'm in the prime of my life. I like to look at the outside society point of view. Make me feel spry.

Aren't you glad you dont have to hear about Brett Favre for the next 3 weeks..................

Do you want to see Michael Vick back in a NFL uniform.....................

2009 What type of season will it be..............

First practice down

So we had our first practice today and I would have to say that things looked pretty good for a first practice. There wasnt too many mistakes out there but there were some which is to be expected. Good start and that all it was. Now we have to continue to build from this point.

Over the course of the last few months I have taken notice of a certain chemistry between Jay Cutler and Greg Olsen and think that its something good in the making there. Two young guys at the forefront of their careers that can continue to grow in the league together. Let me say this about Greg, since he was drafted here in the first round he has been a guy that has been willing to put in the work to become a great player. I think that he is a guy that understand that your game is only as strong as your weaknesses. He has a nonstop approach to try to make himself into the complete package and I think this will be the year that he puts it all on display. I think he is a (very near) future pro bowler. Along with Jay they can make a great tandem for years to come.

Before you know we will be playing preseason games...............

R U ready for some football????????

Half way thru day one

The first half of day one is always a drag especially if you"re a vet. For the most part, we sit through day one of install. For you that are not up on the football jargon, that when we put in the first plays. Since I have been here for as long as the offensive coordinator I have heard this same thing at least ten times. You got to remember we do the same thing in OTA's. Saying all that its still a necessary evil because you have new guys in the room now. The rookies and the free agents might be hearing all of this stuff for the first or second time. Let me draw a parallel for you if you will. Learning a play book is like taking a foreign language class. Believe it or not the plays through out high school, college and professional dont differ all that much and from NFL team to NFL team we all basically run 75-80% of the same plays if not more. One thing they always say about the NFL is that its a copy cat league. If a team is having success doing something the other teams will follow suit. Take the wildcat for example. The difference is the terminology for calling a play. For example we may call solo right slot plane 200 teepee z dagger. Someone will be running the same play and call it trey right flex kick 2 strong post flanker dig. Thats why when you are new guy trying to learn 200, 300, 400 plays you have to be a sharp person. You have to forget everything you called every other play you grew up running and learn how to call it something else. Thats just the beginning, I won't even get into if the defense plays a certain way all he adjustments you have to make on the run.

Ok where was I....

Although its boring you have to challenge yourself mentally to pay attention because it may be one little detail that changes about the play and if you wasnt paying attention you missed it. I try to take notes on every play even the simple ones because it keeps me engaged.

One thing that comes up in the first meeting is our over team goals and when we break down to offense defense our offensive goals. We have one goal and thats to win the Super Bowl. Right now all 32 teams have that goal and everyone will talk about pursuing it. Honestly a fourth of the teams can cancel that dream because the reality of being a bad team will get in the way. Half of the league think they have the goods to get there. The other fourth of the teams really believe that they have a chance to get there and we are one of those teams. Of course, we will have to remain healthy and things like that but when we line up this year we will feel like we are the one of the elite teams in this league. Got to get ready for practice ........................... A championship is on the line

Reporting for duty sir.

So the 2009 season officially starts for your Chicago Bears tomorrow. Today all players had to report, off we go down to Bourbonnais, IL..... i know what your thinking, where the hell is that. Its a small little town in Kankakee county about 30-45 south of the city. We live and practice on the campus of Olivet Nazarene University.

This camp is starting off with a bang. The media is already making up stories. If you haven't heard yet Urlacher and Cutler supposedly got into a confrontation during OTA's but the contrived story line has changed more than a women's mind about what she is going to wear to the party. This is what makes us skeptical about our lovely media. From what I have seen of the two the have been pretty cool with each other.

The last time I decided to do a blog chronicling a season we went all the way to the Super Bowl. I have a feeling we have a special season ahead of us. Stay tuned as I take you thru the season fro =m my eyes. I would love to hear back from you...

Peace, its time for me to lay it down and get ready to put in work tomorrow.

Later
